Fundraising Codes of Practice

Fundraising Ireland requires its members to abide by a Code of Professional Conduct. However, it does not currently develop Codes of Fundraising Practice.

Other organisations within the not-for-profit sector have created Codes of Fundraising Practice and the ICTR has developed the ‘Statement of Guiding Principles in Fundraising’.

Below, click on the links to read information about the organisations that have developed and implemented Codes of Fundraising Practice.

ICTR is the representative organisation of charities (over 150 member organisations) committed to creating the climate for a vibrant, independent charity sector in Ireland.  We focus particularly on policy issues and the promotion of best practice and public confidence in the sector.  On behalf of the Dept. of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs, ICTR developed and is currently overseeing the implementation of the Statement of Guiding Principles for fundraising. Dóchas is the association of Irish Non-Governmental Development Organisations. It provides a forum for consultation and cooperation between its 45 member organisations, and helps them speak with a single voice on development issues.

Dóchas has developed a Code of Conduct on Images and Messages that provides NGOs with a framework, which they can refer to when designing and implementing their public communications strategy. Click here for more information.

Irish Fundraising Forum for Direct Recruitment (IFFDR)

Established in 2003 the Irish Fundraising Forum for Direct Recruitment (IFFDR) is a voluntary body composed of individuals, charities and providers of “Direct Recruitment” services.

“Direct recruitment” seeks to attract new regular donors to support a charity’s cause. It is carried out on a one-to-one basis, providing the opportunity to answer questions about the charity’s work and thereby initiate a connection between the public and the charity. It is undertaken in a variety of public places, including on the street and from house to house.

Believing in the benefits of regulation by Codes of Practice and promoting high standards, the IFFDR has developed a Code of Practice to promote best practice to those undertaking Direct Recruitment fundraising. It includes behaviour on the streets, and ensures training covers transparency, accountability and disclosure of important information.
